What it measures

Chromium (in its trivalent, nutritional form) is a trace element thought to have a minor role in supporting the action of insulin, the hormone that controls blood sugar. It is present in small amounts across many foods (whole grains, meat, broccoli, nuts), and a genuine dietary deficiency is very rare and difficult to demonstrate — it has been described only in unusual circumstances such as long-term intravenous nutrition lacking chromium. Despite popular chromium supplements marketed for blood sugar or weight, the evidence for a meaningful benefit in people who are not deficient is weak. Measuring blood chromium is not a routine or useful test for nutrition. Where it is measured, the usual reason is to check for excess rather than deficiency — most notably to monitor people with metal-on-metal hip or joint implants, where wear can release chromium (and cobalt) into the blood, or in cases of industrial exposure.
