MPV (mean platelet volume)
The average size of your platelets, reported with the full blood count. Larger platelets tend to be younger and more active, so MPV gives a clue about how the bone marrow is producing them — helping interpret a high or low platelet count.
What it measures
MPV is the average volume of your platelets, the tiny cell fragments that help blood clot, and it is reported automatically with the full blood count. Platelets are made in the bone marrow, and, like other cells, they tend to be larger when they are newly released. So MPV is essentially a marker of platelet age and activity: young, freshly produced platelets are bigger, while older ones are smaller. Its main use is to help interpret an abnormal platelet count. When the platelet count is low, a high MPV suggests the marrow is responding by pumping out large young platelets to compensate — pointing toward increased destruction or consumption of platelets in the circulation (as in immune thrombocytopenia). A low MPV with a low platelet count instead suggests the marrow itself is not producing enough. A high MPV can also accompany some inherited platelet conditions and certain marrow disorders.
