Copper
A trace element needed for red blood cells, nerves, connective tissue and many enzymes. Both too little (deficiency, often from excess zinc or malabsorption) and too much (as in the inherited condition Wilson's disease) cause problems, so both directions matter.

Copper is an essential trace mineral that the body needs for making red blood cells, keeping nerves and connective tissue healthy, and running numerous enzymes. Most copper in the blood is carried by a protein called ceruloplasmin, so copper and ceruloplasmin are usually interpreted together. Copper deficiency is uncommon but important: it causes anaemia and a low white-cell count (which can look like a bone-marrow problem) and, over time, nerve and spinal-cord damage. A frequently missed cause is too much zinc — high-dose zinc supplements block copper absorption — along with malabsorption and previous stomach or bariatric surgery. What a high value can mean
- Inflammation / infection, pregnancy, oestrogen (the pill) — ceruloplasmin rises as an acute-phase protein, carrying copper up with it.
- Wilson's disease — a complex picture: total serum copper can be low, normal or high, but the free (non-ceruloplasmin) copper is high, with a low ceruloplasmin and high urine copper.
- Excess copper intake or cholestatic liver disease.
What a low value can mean
- Copper deficiency — causes anaemia, a low white-cell count, and nerve/spinal-cord problems.
- Excess zinc — high-dose zinc supplements block copper absorption; a common, missed cause.
- Malabsorption, coeliac disease, previous stomach or bariatric surgery.
- Menkes disease — a rare inherited copper-deficiency disorder in infants.

Copper is worth checking in specific situations rather than routinely. Consider deficiency when there is an unexplained anaemia with a low white-cell count or nerve symptoms, especially in someone taking zinc supplements or with malabsorption or previous bariatric surgery — correcting it (and stopping excess zinc) reverses much of the harm.
