Remnant cholesterol

What it measures

Remnant cholesterol is the cholesterol carried in triglyceride-rich lipoprotein particles and their partly broken-down 'remnants' — the fats made in the liver and gut (VLDL and their leftovers), as distinct from LDL and HDL. It is usually not measured directly but calculated for free from a standard lipid panel: total cholesterol minus HDL cholesterol minus LDL cholesterol. Interest in it has grown because strong evidence indicates that these remnant particles are, like LDL, a direct causal driver of atherosclerosis — they too enter the artery wall and deposit cholesterol, and they also carry inflammatory potential.
